How Honest Insurance compares
Every figure on this site should be checkable. This page tells you where each one comes from, how we order results, and where our data stops.
Where our premiums come from
1,736 of 1,780 policies on this site carry a premium we have traced to a published source, with the date we took it. The rest are illustrative examples and are labelled as such on every card. We would rather show you that distinction than hide it.

Health and dental: Commonwealth open data
Health and dental premiums come from the PrivateHealth.gov.au open dataset published monthly on data.gov.au by the Commonwealth Ombudsman, licensed CC BY 3.0 AU. We currently use the 1 August 2026release and refresh when a new one is published. Each card shows the regulator’s own product code so you can look the policy up yourself.
We cover 1,736 products from 10 funds across all 7 rating regions and all 4 cover scales. Health premiums are set by state and by who is covered, so choosing those on a comparison page changes the actual published rate — it is not a display filter. There is no separate ACT region: the Commonwealth rates ACT together with NSW, which is why that option reads NSW/ACT.
Premiums shown are monthly at 100% — before the Australian Government Rebate, which reduces what most people actually pay based on age and income. Your own rate will differ.
We exclude products restricted to employees of particular organisations, since you cannot buy them. From what remains we show the cheapest product each fund offers at each government hospital tier, and for dental the cheapest extras policy from each fund covering both general and major dental.
The other categories
Car, home, travel, pet, life and business insurance have no equivalent public dataset — premiums are priced individually, so there is no published rate to cite. Those cards carry illustrative figures and say so plainly. Use them to compare what a policy covers, not what it costs, and get a live quote for price.
How we order results
The default ordering is breadth of cover: how many of the listed features a product’s own documentation says it covers. You can re-sort by price at any time. Ordering is never influenced by whether a provider pays us, and we do not sell placement.
Breadth is not the same as quality. A policy covering more features is not automatically better for you — a cheaper policy covering only what you need may be. We publish the ordering rule so you can decide how much weight it deserves.
What we do not compare
We do not compare the whole market. We show a subset of Australian insurers, and there are products — including some good ones — that never appear here. A provider being absent says nothing about its quality. For health and dental we show the cheapest product per fund per tier, so a fund’s other products are not listed even though they exist.
How we get paid, and what it does not buy
We may earn a referral fee when you click through to an approved commercial partner. Each relationship is disclosed beside the relevant quote link; unmarked links are direct insurer links that earn us nothing. Referral fees do not affect which policies appear, their order, or how they are described. We do not run display advertising, and we do not sell sponsored positions in comparison tables.
When we are wrong
Insurance data changes and we will get things wrong. If a figure here does not match what the insurer tells you, the insurer is right and we want to know — tell us and we will correct it and update the verified date. Health premiums are refreshed when the monthly Commonwealth dataset is republished.
What we are not
Honest Insurance is not an insurer, broker or financial adviser, and holds no Australian Financial Services Licence. Nothing on this site takes account of your objectives, financial situation or needs, and nothing here is a recommendation that a product suits you. Always read the Product Disclosure Statement and Target Market Determination before buying. Disputes about an insurer go to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority, free of charge.
